Technical Platforms

The Molecular Evolution Core provides a wide selection of state-of-the-art equipment to help you with your research. Scientists from multiple research areas can now employ the use of a diverse spread of technical platforms offered by the core to help accomplish their research goals.

Next Generation Sequencing

Illumina Next Generation Sequencers

Illumina's next-generation sequencing platforms deliver exceptionally high-quality data with outstanding accuracy. The core houses benchtop as well as production scale sequencers with a wide range of data output capabilities, making services suitable for almost all projects. The sequencers available are the MiniSeq, MiSeq, NextSeq, and HiSeq 2500.

Sanger Sequencing

SeqStudio™ Genetic Analyzer System

The Applied Biosystems SeqStudio Genetic Analyzer is a 4-capillary, fluorescence-based capillary electrophoresis system with an all-in-one reagent cartridge that allows for easy operation. It also provides the flexibility to perform both sequencing and fragment analysis in a single run.

DNA and RNA Oligosynthesis

Biosset ASM 2000

The ASM-2000 high-throughput DNA/RNA synthesizer allows for parallel synthesis of 96 sequences of standard, degenerate, or modified DNA and RNA oligonucleotides that can be used in a variety of applications such as sequencing, genetic analysis, PCR- and probe-based hybridization assays, gene building, siRNA, aptamers or probes.

Liquid Handling Automation

Andrew Liquid Handling Robot

The Andrew is a companion robot suite that provides a reliable and convenient alternative to manual pipetting and complex liquid handling workstations. It can run independently for hours and provide reproducible and accurate execution of experiments.

Qiacube

The Qiacube uses advanced technology to process QIAGEN spin columns, enabling seamless integration of automated, low-throughput sample prep into the laboratory workflow. It can purify DNA, RNA, plasmids, and proteins.

Sample and Library Quality Control

DeNovix Microvolume Spectrophotometer/Fluorometer

The DeNovix is a powerful instrument that seamlessly integrates fluorescence analysis and 1uL UV-Vis in the same unit. While coupled with the DeNovix dsDNA quantification assays, it can measure a range of 0.5 pg/uL to 37500 ng/uL.

Agilent Bioanalyzer 2100

The bioanalyzer system provides sizing, quantification, and purity assessment for DNA, RNA, and protein samples. Minimal sample consumption of 1-4 uL.

Real-time PCR

The Stratgene Mx3005P qPCR machine is a fully integrated qPCR amplification, detection and data analysis system. The system design combines a state-of-the-art thermal cycler, an advanced optical system with a quartz-tungsten halogen lamp and a single photomultiplier tube (PMT), and complete data analysis software. Unique to the Mx3005P is a feature that allows for the selection of mismatched excitation and emission filters.

ELISA

Crocodile is a compact ELISA workstation providing the same functionality as five instruments in a footprint similar to a standard stand-alone reader. The use of Crocodile reduces assay time by eliminating the need to move plates between dispenser, shaker, incubator, washer, and reader.

High Throughput Microbial Colony Picking

QPix2 XT Colony Picking Robot

The Genetix QPix2 XT is a microbial colony picker that can identify, take images, count, and process well samples. It can accurately pick 30,000 colonies/day and can also track plates, wells, and clone locations.

Cell and Particle Counting

Z2 Particle Counter and Analyzer

The Z2 is the latest cell and particle counter of the Z series. Its overall analysis range is 1um to 120um in diameter. This particle counter has the ability to display various kinds of data between user-selected areas of the graph including the entire size distribution graph as well as the size statistic and counts.

Automated Gel Extraction

Blue Pippin

The Blue Pippin uses agarose gel cassettes and can gather data from the range of 100 bp up to 50 kb. It has high pass filtering, which allows users to collect all fragments above a size threshold. The target sizes/ranges of sizes are entered in the software and fractions are collected in a buffer. Up to 5 samples/gel cassette can be run, with no possibility of cross-contamination.

Phage and Surface Display

Phage Display

Phage display is a molecular evolution technique that allows for the exploration of library diversity to the limits of theoretical confines. The technology relies on the display of proteins of interest (peptides, antibodies, scaffolds, etc.) on the surface of a phage. It is one of the most powerful and widely used laboratory techniques that allow us to uncover molecular recognition/binding events of the protein-protein, protein-peptide, and protein-DNA nature.

Scientists at the Molecular Evolution core can offer their expertise in tailoring the most appropriate phage display system to meet your lab's demands. We are confident in generating high-quality libraries with a diversity of 108. We can also modify and adjust standard biopanning strategies to meet your specific needs for selection.
