Georgia Tech has a long and productive history of working closely with many U.S. Department of Energy National Labs. Together, we have tackled research of mutual interest, trained students for careers in energy-related disciplines, and developed technology that has been disseminated for many uses. The national labs have also supported Georgia Tech through their user facilities, training, postdoctoral, and student internship programs, and many Georgia Tech alumni are employed long-term at national labs.
Faculty have frequently collaborated with national labs on a broad range of topics including materials, clean energy, computational science and engineering, biological sciences, manufacturing, transportation, climate, national security, and policy, not all of which have been specifically focused on energy-related applications. These collaborations have led to numerous joint publications, grants, patents, products, and training opportunities for Georgia Tech students.
The purpose of Georgia Tech's national lab strategic engagement plan is to grow the relationship between Georgia Tech and the national labs, focusing on identifying and advancing goals of mutual strategic importance. Operationally, this work will increase the visibility of our interactions with the national labs, establish a set of standard operating procedures for administration and faculty engagement, and establish metrics that reflect the status and growth of these relationships. The strategic engagement committee is composed of faculty from across Georgia Tech including the schools, colleges, interdisciplinary research institutes, and GTRI.
