The Georgia Institute of Technology is excited to announce the internal search for the inaugural Executive Director of the Institute for Neuroscience, Neurotechnology, and Society (INNS). This new Interdisciplinary Research Institute (IRI) will build upon the foundation laid by the Neuro Next Initiative, fostering cutting-edge research and innovation at the intersection of neuroscience, neurotechnology, and societal impact. INNS aims to advance our understanding of the brain and nervous system, develop transformative technologies, and address critical societal challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration and engagement.

Town Hall

The office of the Vice President of Interdisciplinary Research hosted a town hall event on November 6, 2024 to keep the Georgia Tech neuro community informed about the search process and to answer questions, as well as to receive feedback about the search and what people wish to see in a future executive director. About Georgia Tech Interdisciplinary Research Institutes: Georgia Tech has nine Interdisciplinary Research Institutes (IRIs) that bring together researchers from different disciplines to address topics of strategic importance to the Institution as well as local, state, national and international communities. Reporting to the Vice President for Interdisciplinary Research (VPIR), these institutes facilitate initiatives that cross disciplinary boundaries. This includes work that tackles national and international challenges and questions related to climate change, clean energy, public health, biotechnology, the bioeconomy, artificial intelligence, quantum information science, advanced manufacturing, and semiconductors.

Through the Office of the VPIR, Georgia Tech also supports the administration of interdisciplinary research through programming and fiscal management, prioritizing career development for research faculty and staff, and promoting and amplifying the impact of IRI-led research with proactive communications and representation in national thought leadership roles.

About The Institute for Neuroscience, Neurotechnology, and Society (INNS): The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) seeks to fill the inaugural Executive Director position within the newly created Institute for Neuroscience, Neurotechnology, and Society (INNS). INNS will work across all of Georgia Tech, catalyzing interdisciplinary scholarship at the intersection of neuroscience, neurotechnology, and society. INNS will serve as the central organizing point for research, collaborations, and outreach related to neuroscience, neurotechnology, and society by working closely with schools and Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) to foster interdisciplinary collaboration. The successful candidate will be familiar with key campus stakeholders and able to build links among and support associated schools, other interdisciplinary research institutes and GTRI, while also envisioning future opportunities both internal and external to Georgia Tech.

Reporting Relationship: INNS reports centrally through the Georgia Tech Office of the Executive Vice President for Research.

Job Summary: The Executive Director leads and administers the Institute for Neuroscience, Neurotechnology, and Society (INNS), developing and communicating a unifying vision for those areas of expertise and integrating life sciences, engineering, social sciences, humanities and other fields as he/she advances interdisciplinary research. As a service-oriented leader, the Executive Director will work with researchers and staff to foster collaborations and initiatives among a variety of stakeholders. He/she will proactively prepare and coordinate preparation of major research grant applications; build communities of interest across campus; cultivate thought leadership; educate key stakeholders and prepare the future workforce; and otherwise increase the profile of Georgia Tech and its research community. The Executive Director will also lead efforts to translate fundamental neurotechnology/neuroscience discoveries into clinical, societal, and technological advances. 

Reporting centrally through the Vice President for Interdisciplinary Research within Georgia Tech's Office of the Executive Vice President for Research, the ED will work with campus leaders, other IRI EDs, and faculty from across campus to execute INSS's goals. Like all IRI EDs, INSS's new ED will be expected to allocate 50% of their effort to the leadership of the IRI and 50% to their primary faculty affiliation, which could be in any of Georgia Tech's academic colleges or research units.

Responsibilities: The Executive Director leads and administers INNS and will develop and communicate a unifying vision for neurotechnology, neuroscience and society research and innovation at Georgia Tech, integrating life sciences, engineering, social sciences, humanities, and other fields as he/she advances interdisciplinary neuroscience research through the integration of scientific, engineering, computational, and humanistic approaches. He/she will be responsible for mentoring, developing, and stewarding INNS' overall strategic direction, key initiatives, and human resources. As a service-oriented leader, the Executive Director will work with researchers and staff to foster collaborations and initiatives among distinct stakeholder groups, proactively prepare and coordinate preparation of major research grant applications; build communities of interest across campus; cultivate thought leadership; educate key stakeholders and prepare the future workforce, increase the profile of Georgia Tech and its research community; and otherwise attract research partners to Georgia Tech. He/she will lead development of INNS/GT partnerships through fostering collaboration across IRIs and the Institute and the development of advisory panels and other external partnerships (academia, government, industry, and nonprofits) to enhance INNS's impact locally and globally.

The Executive Director will lead efforts to translate fundamental neurotechnology/neuroscience discoveries into clinical, societal, and technological advances. He/she is responsible for securing the resources for infrastructure, facilities, and initiatives, including potential capital campaign activities. The candidate will be responsible for seeking external funding for INNS research and programs, including federal and state funding, philanthropic contributions, and industry partnerships.

Required Qualifications: The successful candidate will have one of the following credentials at the Georgia Institute of Technology: a current appointment as a Tenured Professor, Principal Research Faculty member, or a Professor of the Practice. The candidate will be a national and/or international leader in the neurosciences/neurotechnology disciplines with a history of deep engagement and impact in interdisciplinary neuro-relevant research. The candidate should have experience securing and managing external funding from federal, state, industry and/or philanthropic partners.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: The successful candidate will be a thoughtful, energetic, innovative, and entrepreneurial leader with a strong marketing mindset to effectively promote INNS' initiatives internally and externally. He/she will be a dynamic oral and written communicator. The candidate should have experience in developing and managing large-scale interdisciplinary R&D programs, to include responsibility for budgets and operations, in areas related to INNS, supporting and mentoring colleagues from various backgrounds and experiences. He/she should be able to demonstrate experience uniting research from distinct perspectives and experience supporting and mentoring colleagues and trainees with many backgrounds and experiences, and demonstrates leadership with a visionary, innovative, and entrepreneurial style through a collaborative and strategic mindset. The successful candidate will understand the multidimensional nature of neuroscience and neurotechnology while addressing the needs of varied stakeholder groups.
