Finalist One – Lewis Wheaton

Lewis A. Wheaton is a Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at Georgia Tech and director of the Cognitive Motor Control Lab. He serves in an administrative role in the College of Sciences as director for the Center for Programs to Increase Engagement in the Sciences (C-PIES).

His research focuses on understanding the neurophysiology and neuroplasticity of motor rehabilitation following upper limb amputation and stroke. This work involves utilizing human brain imaging, kinematics, behavior, and gaze tracking to understand perceptual-motor relationships related to motor control. This multimodal approach is crucial to shaping patterns of novel rehabilitation paradigms and optimizing neuromotor recovery using an individualized medicine approach. As director of C-PIES, Wheaton works to build a strong community for research and scholarship across the College of Sciences. This has led to the development of programs and activities for students and faculty funded by the philanthropic support through relationships with the College of Sciences Advisory Board and Google.

Wheaton has published over 60 manuscripts, authored book chapters, and served as section editor for the Encyclopedia of the Human Brain (2nd Edition). He holds several patents related to prosthesis device designs for neurorehabilitation. He serves as the president of the American Society for Neurorehabilitation and is a member of the National Advisory Board on Medical Rehabilitation Research of the National Institutes of Health. He also serves as an advisory board member of the Jefferson-Moss Medical Rehabilitation Research Institute and the Rehabilitation Medicine Scientist Training Program of the Association of Academic Physiatrists. During his time at Georgia Tech, Wheaton has served as an elected councilmember in the city of Smyrna and was a non-partisan appointee as a member of the State Rehabilitation Council of the Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency by Gov. Nathan Deal.

Prior to his 2008 faculty appointment at Georgia Tech, Wheaton received his Ph.D. in Neuroscience and Cognitive Sciences from the University of Maryland while a fellow of the Medical Neurology Branch of the National Institutes of Health. His postdoctoral fellowship was at the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
