Academic Research Security

Georgia Tech’s Academic Research Security Program is designed to safeguard intellectual capital, protect research from exploitation by outside entities, including foreign government, and ensure responsible stewardship of federal and state resources. 

Institutional Financial Support for Sponsored Projects

The Research Operations team manages EVPR-level institutional financial support requests for sponsored projects at Georgia Tech including:

Cost Share & Institutional Support: Cost Share is a documented, reported institutional contribution to a sponsored project. Institutional Support, by contrast, also aids research but is only tracked internally, not reported to the sponsor. F&A waivers and tuition waivers, detailed below, represent another type of cost share.

New Investigator Support: Junior faculty who receive a federal new investigator award (e.g., NSF CAREER, ONR Young Investigator Award, DARPA YFA) may be eligible to receive up to $20,000 in Georgia Tech institutional support. 

Research Gift vs. Sponsored Award

Contracting Officers within the Office of Sponsored Programs can advise whether funding should be classified as a Research Gift or a sponsored award, including those directed to specific faculty, labs, centers, or defined research areas.  

Waivers and Exceptions

Georgia Tech’s PI/PD Eligibility Policy defines which faculty titles are approved to serve as Principal Investigator (PI) or Project Director (PD) on sponsored projects. Individuals who do not meet these criteria may request an exception by following the established PI/PD Eligibility Policy Exception process. Exceptions may be granted when consistent with sponsor requirements and determined to be in the best interest of the Institute.

F&A Waivers: Indirect costs for university research, also known as Facilities and Administrative (F&A), or overhead costs, are expenses that support the overall research infrastructure but are not directly attributable to specific research projects. Georgia Tech’s Approved F&A Rates should be used when developing proposal budgets. Use of any alternative or reduced rate requires an approved waiver.  

On externally sponsored projects, a Tuition Waiver refers to tuition that Georgia Tech does not charge to the sponsor and is instead covered by the Institute. Unlike tuition remission, a tuition waiver represents an internal institutional cost and is not billed to or recovered from the sponsor.
