Associate Vice President for Research Operations and Infrastructure
The Georgia Institute of Technology invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Vice President for Research Operations and Infrastructure (AVP-ROI). Reporting to the Chief Research Operating Officer (CROO), the AVP-ROI is responsible for various Principal Investigator (PI)-facing aspects of research operations, infrastructure, and administration. This position is a faculty position appointed at 75 percent time.
Position Scope and Responsibilities
The AVP-ROI is responsible for ensuring the effective and strategic support of research. This position oversees: facilitation and support of research; internally funded research programs in coordination with the colleges and interdisciplinary research institutes; research space and core facilities; research computing and data; and policy related to research administration and operations. The AVP-ROI will be a primary interface (with the CROO) to faculty and faculty leadership, including but not limited to the Associate Deans of Research (ADRs) within the colleges. This position will also collaborate regularly with the Associate Vice President – Research Administration (AVP-RA) and the Associate Vice President for Research Integrity Assurance (AVP-RIA), especially on issues of faculty engagement.
The AVP-ROI will be the campus lead on matters related to the research administration, such as overhead/facilities and administrative (F&A) cost waivers, cost share, institutional commitments, and organizational conflict of interest (OCI). Working in coordination with the Vice President for Interdisciplinary Research (VPIR) and the CROO, the AVP-ROI also provides tactical and operational guidance to the development of research faculty and integration of the Georgia Tech Research Institute/Resident Instruction (GTRI/RI) relationship.
The AVP-ROI collaborates with vice presidents/provosts, deans, members of the President’s cabinet, school chairs, and associate deans and associate chairs for research to help ensure that all research programs meet the highest standard of excellence and are supported in pursuit of Georgia Tech’s strategic research goals.
Specific responsibilities of the AVP-ROI include, but are not limited to:
- Serve as an integral member of the EVPR’s, CROO’s, and Institute leadership team to further the Institute’s vision, mission, and goals.
- Assist the EVPR, CROO, and colleges with research strategy and operational support for research administration. Identify and address issues to improve the administration of research.
- Collaborate with the CROO, AVP-RA, and General Manager of the Georgia Tech Research Corporation / Georgia Tech Applied Research Corporation (GTRC/GTARC) on issues related to the management and administration of sponsored program funding and operations. Collaborate with the AVP-RIA on PI-related research compliance issues. Supervise several leaders over facilities, technology operations, and other functions.
- Oversee Institute-level seed grant programs and internal funding mechanisms to foster and further develop existing research collaborations and initiatives across the Institute.
- Manage the limited submissions process for external sponsored proposals.
- Establish and manage Institute guidance and processes for research space, core facilities, and shared equipment. Work closely with the CROO, colleges, schools, Infrastructure and Sustainability, and the Provost’s Office to address issues and leverage opportunities, especially related to research space and the recruitment and retention of faculty.
- Drive new processes and structures for capital planning, space planning, space occupancy and utilization, and capital project management/governance.
- Establish guidance and work with campus peers on implementation and compliance matters pertaining to research computing and research data management.
- Oversee the management and administration of the Krone Engineered Biosystems Building (EBB), in coordination with the CROO. Direct research support operational improvement and/or restructuring related to EBB. Supervise the EBB Director of Business Operations.
- In coordination with EVPR leadership and the CROO, work to communicate and foster faculty buy in on key EVPR initiatives, including expected changes due to federal funding and/or indirect cost reimbursement adjustments.
- Coordinate with the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) and the AVP-RA on joint research and operational opportunities and matters.
- Chair meetings of the Associate Deans for Research group.
- Represent the Office of the EVPR, as appropriate, to various internal constituencies, as well as externally to agencies, institutions, and organizations.
- Other duties as assigned.
This position is a year-round faculty position appointed at 75 percent time (percent time of appointment, workload, and terms will be determined in consultation with the selected individual and their home department supervisor). The selected candidate will maintain their current faculty rank, with an administrative appointment as AVP-ROI.
Position Qualifications
This position is open to members of the academic tenured faculty of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Applicants should have a strong record of scholarship as well as evidence of advanced success in complex administrative leadership roles, preferably in the research and/or research administration areas.
The ideal candidate will be familiar with the broader higher education landscape and university operations; is an intellectual leader among faculty; serves as a strong advocate for research, faculty and students; is a proven energetic and conscientious leader; and demonstrates the ability to weigh both institute business needs and faculty needs in times of fiscal constraint.

The Executive Vice President for Research (EVPR) is the chief research officer for the Institute. Working closely with Georgia Tech’s colleges, research units, and faculty, the EVPR provides central administration leadership for all research, economic development, and related support units within the Institute.
