To engage undergraduates in the field of nanotechnology research and engineering, the SENIC team offers two paid technical college internship positions during the spring semester. Students must be enrolled in a technical college within commuting distance of Georgia Tech. One student is selected to intern in the IEN Bio-cleanroom and one student is selected to intern in the IEN/IMat Materials Characterization Facility. Bio-Cleanroom Internship Overview

The IEN Bio-Cleanroom intern will become responsible for many of the day-to-day needs of the cleanroom facility and will learn to operate a variety of analytical tools. In addition to using cleanroom tools and equipment for experiments, the lab technician will also be charged with training other cleanroom users to use said equipment. He or She will also be participating in the maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment and processes. They will also be in charge of tool health checks to make sure all equipment is operational if it goes through a period of no-use. Applicants should be self-motivated professionals who can work well with team members from diverse backgrounds.

Estimated hours per week

8-12 hours per week, worked over 1-2 days per week

Rate of compensation

Possible range $10 to $15 per hour based on experience level

Requirements
  • At least one semester completed in college program.
  • Knowledge of office computer applications important (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.).
  • Seeking someone who is organized, attentive to detail, self-starting, proactive, good communicator, flexible (shifting priorities as needed), and proficient in multi-tasking.
  • Excellent customer service and people skills are a must!
  • Prior cleanroom experience is not necessary, however prior experience working in a lab environment is strongly desired.
Knowledge to be Acquired
  • Theoretical and Practical lab experience
  • Proficiency in a wide range of materials characterization and analysis tools including: Scanning electron microscopes, particle size analysis tools, optical analysis tools, microscopy tools, and additive manufacturing tools
  • Familiarity with micro-electronic and micro-fluidic devices
  • Experience with presenting technical lab data/information
  • Research tools/equipment troubleshooting skills

MCF Internship Overview

The Materials Characterization Facility intern will become responsible for many of the day-to-day needs of the MCF and will learn to operate a variety of characterization tools. In addition to using tools and equipment for experiments, the lab technician will also be charged with training other MCF users to use said equipment. He or She will also be participating in the maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment and processes. Applicants should be self-motivated professionals who can work well with team members from diverse backgrounds.
